hello, I saved a gif of peter ages ago where he is blowing a kiss to the camera standing between two men holding a hat, looks early 30s, can you help me identify the film? and in general where can I get some of his german films? thanks
(the gif in question is this one:)
The gif is from Die Koffer des Herrn O.F. (‘The Luggage of Mr. O.F’), and, you’re right, it’s from 1931. If you search our tag, there are other gifs and pictures from the film.
As for acquiring the films, I’m not exactly sure of a good place to purchase any DVDs, although if you’re looking for a specific one, a few people around (us…? :) ) could probably help you out! They used to all be uploaded on Megaupload and the like, but now they’re mostly just sitting around on peoples’ computers, I guess. If there are gifs of it, chances are someone around has a download of it, so just ask if you have a particular one in mind!
Some of the films I have that are his early German movies have English subtitles, but a few do not. Some are easier to follow without subtitles than others, haha.
I've read that Joseph Goebbels warned Peter to leave Germany shortly after Hitler came to power. I find it hard to imagine Goebbels being kind enough to warn him that it was too dangerous to stay in the country as Goebbels persecuted all German Jewish professional entertainers and would have sooner thrown Peter into a camp.
I’ve read that in a few different places, also. To me, it does seem pretty suspicious that he would let Peter know about it. What made Peter special enough to get that information from Goebbels? Especially, like you said, when he just threw everyone else in a camp.
Honestly, I think that people were aware that something was going to happen in Germany, and Peter was just lucky enough to be able to leave the country. The story, iirc, stemmed from Peter himself and I think he could have just elaborated or totally fabricated it. I don’t remember exactly where the story originated, but what if he had said it in jest and it was taken out of context, or simply taken too seriously?
He also said he wrote a letter to Hitler, which I guess he could have done, but I think Hitler had other stuff to do than read a letter from Peter Lorre. I mean, how do you just write a letter to Hitler? Where would you get his address? Hmm.
